" Folks,
On my recent visit to Japan I went to Waseda University in central Tokyo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waseda_University) to meet with a couple of lecturers who are involved in a very interesting project they set up called 'Cross Cultural Distance Learning' in which their learners have regular guided video conferences with learners in other universities (solely in Asia, currently). The course is all planned and running, but they are looking for partner institutions outside of Asia who might want to get involved.
At the same time they are also looking for creative contacts in the primary and high school sectors with which to establish working relationships. If anyone on this list is interested in initial contact, please get in touch with me and I will pass your details on.
Thanks in advance,
Gavin " mailto: Gavin Dudeney <dudeney@gmail.com>
"I have been involved with this project for the past two years now, and still going on. The course, World Englishes and Miscommunications II, is offered to undergraduates and as of last year, there are about 5 universities in Asia who have been participating in video conferences and asynchronous discussions. The course ends with a face-to-face meeting in Singapore with participating professors and 3 selected students from all participating unis. This meeting is actually a week-long seminar where students attend lectures and discussions. During this time, they also engage in a collaborative task project which they need to present on the last day of the seminar. Professors are expected to write reports, do lectures, and write articles on the topic (WE). Hotel accommodations (not airfare) for students are all paid by the Cross-Cultural Distance Learning sponsors organized by Waseda University- teachers are well taken care of as well.
I shared this project with BaWers, I think, last year http://www.slideshare.net/aidenyeh/baw2007-blended-learning
and also at Hongkong Association of Applied Linguistics conference
http://www.slideshare.net/aidenyeh/making-it-work-across-boundaries
For 2008, course will begin in September. If you're interested in participating, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
