Problems of teaching and learning literature of ES countries

I have a little experience teaching literature--everything from introductory courses to survey courses such as World Literature. Teaching the literature requires also being able to provide some contexts--cultural, historical, etc.--so students can begin to understand some of the work's meaning. From a teacher's point of view, it requires that I have done some research and perhaps provided additional resources beyond what a textbook or literature anthology might include. From a student's point of view, it requires that there be an open mind, a readiness to consider diverse perspectives, and a willingness to learn new ideas that may or may not be relevant to an individual's life. Many students that I encounter have developed the belief that there is only right meaning attached to a work or a portion of it. Sometimes that is an initial hurdle to overcome in order to help the students see all the possible meanings. Then we go to the next level to identify how the author may have constructed the work to produce the effect and the meaning. In concept this sounds like a very easy process, but for many students, it can be a slow, arduous process. Some want to "flake out" and ask if I can't just tell them. Others go off into directions and misread what they have which results in misinterpretations.
Anyway, that's a start for this thread, although I don't know if helps anyone.

Opinions differ as to the functions of human language but the two main functions of the language: the communicative one and the expressive one. They are not independent functions because the expressive function of language is realized in the process of speech communication. The communicative function of language is in fact the synthesis of language functions which are revealed to the full in the process of communication and cognition. The usage of these two functions finds its realization under different circumstances and under the influence of different factors. The expressive function of the language is closely connected with the human’s thought. People use the language to express their opinion and thoughts. This function reports feelings or attitudes to people, to the objects, or evokes feelings or thoughts. To main aspects of this function are generally noted: to express feelings and to evoke certain feelings. Informative function is essentially communication of information. This function is used by humans to describe the facts they know and want to exchange with other humans.

The purpose of this paper is to put one in the picture about what they have in common and what are the distinctions between them. The executive branch of the US government is headed by the president. So, the president of the USA is the head of one leading states in the world. That is why it is very interesting and important to know as much as possible about those who were presidents of this country, about their similarities and differences. So, Article II of the US Constitution admits executive power to the president. The president should be a natural-born citizen of the United States, at least 35 years old, and a resident of the country for at least 14 years. The president is elected for a term of four years and can only be reelected for one more term. This means that one can only be president twice. This law went into operation in 1951. Before that, the law was different. In fact, Franklin Roosevelt became a president in 1933. He was still president when he died in 1945. He was a president for 12 years. No one was president longer than he was. The 22 nd amendment was adopted after Franklin Roosevelt’s four successive terms. The president was elected on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of a leap year and took office on the 20th of January. There were 43 presidents in the history of the USA. They were representatives of 17 states. After studying party affiliation of the US presidents it should be said that all presidents of the USA were representatives of five political parties. The nation’s presidents have had much in common. The presidents of the USA were different people. The presidents were ranked as “great”, “near great”, “average”, “below average” and “failure” presidents. The present American president George Walker Bush isn’t ranked either. Of course, historians will rank him in future.

Teaching online courses has many challenges, but I think it is entirely possible to do it if you have good course design and the right kinds of support to help the teacher and the students. Most schools in the U.S. now have some or many courses available online, not just in learning language but in all subjects.
I teach literature, humanities and ethics online, and the students always like the convenience.

Dear Alex,
Have you tried to find out why the book is entitled like this? Is the name connected with Spain, its religious traditions, catolicism?
What do you persoanlly think of the title? How does it influence the interpretation of the book?

I had watched NOW on our local PBS television station (it's shown on Sundays in many places throughout the U.S.), but like almost all (or many) shows and programs produced and televised on PBS, they provide many classroom materials and resources for teachers to use. If you go to http://www.pbs.org you can find many different kinds of shows that cover not only current topics but also arts, culture, history, politics, etc. The website is high quality, with fairly easy navigation and additional resources sometimes not seen on television. Most materials are reliable and authoritative too--a much better online resources than Wikipedia (even though that has its role to play sometimes).

Maryna's paper addresses the teaching of language and culture. At times there has been a lot of discussion in our professional community, especially among those who view English as an International Language, as to the teaching of culture. Should we teach culture? And if English is an International Language, whose culture do we teach? There was a time, for example, when Saudi Arabia wanted students to learn English but not American/English culture. In the United States, I teach English to students from all over the world. If a Brazilian is doing business with a person from Taiwan and they are using English, which socio-cultural norms do they follow? It's a very interesting question.
Maryna also mentions that "education should have at its disposal such methods of teaching that will promote the introduction into the learning process the concepts of antidiscrimination, justice and pluralism." I believe this is part of the philosophy of more and more teachers that language classes shouldn't merely focus on topics such as music, food, and travel--that our students are in fact now members of a global community, and thus, we should look at global issues. Kip Cates, who teaches in Japan, has worked extensively on promoting the use of global issues in the classroom. You can read his article "Teaching for a Better World: Global Issues and Language Education" at http://www.hurights.or.jp/pub/hreas/5/06cates.pdf You can also find teaching materials on global issues at a number of sites. Here are two: http://www.exchanges.state.gov/forum/journal/ http://www2.tesol.org/communities/tsr
Interesting post Maryna!

I don't teach ESL or languages, but I do teach literature, humanities and ethics and I used to teach English composition courses at a community college in Oklahoma City. I visited Ukraine one year to participate in a two-week teachers' training, and I may have met you there. Poetry is also a favorite pasttime of mine!
I wish you the best in your conference and hope everyone learns a great deal.
